Using Essential oils safely in Pregnancy 

With everything out there today about using Essential Oils, there is a lot of false and unsafe information out there as well. When I first started using essential oils around 7 years ago there wasn’t much information out there to research and I did quite a few things that I now know to be unsafe.  By sharing what I have learned since then, I hope you can avoid some of my mistakes.

The Safety of essential oils in pregnancy is a tricky subject. Here’s some things I have learned:

Dilute, Dilute, Dilute:

You should never use essential oils “neat” {undiluted} on your skin pregnant. Just like with any other product, food, or medicine you can become sensitized to an essential oil which can cause it to be less effective, cause an allergic reaction or anaphylactic shock. Because essential oils are extremely concentrated proper dilution is necessary, 1- 2% dilution is generally deemed as safe for pregnant women. {1 drop of EO in 1 tsp carrier oil}

Some great carrier oils I have found are Apricot, Grapeseed, Sweet Almond, Jojoba, Avocado, Sunflower and Fractionated Coconut oil.

Another way to dilute essential oils is to mix them with epsom salts before using them in a bath.

Just Remember that a little bit goes a long way. More is not necessarily better.

Diffusing:

Its best to avoid essential oil use during the first trimester. When it comes to diffusing an essential oil you should Avoid Prolonged Exposure. Basically diffuse in short increments of 15-20 mins at a time. Prolonged exposure, an hour or more, can contribute to vertigo, nausea, and headaches.

Absolute No No’s:

Using an essential oil “Neat”, Mixing essential oils in your food or drink, Taking essential oils internally, or using essential oils in a “Birth Pool” {this is a risk to your newborn}.

So what oils can I use and which ones can I not?

 

Safe Oils: 

Citrus Oils: {Photosensitive} Bergamont, Lime, Lemon, Sweet Orange, Mandarin, Grapefruit, & Tangerine. German or Roman Camomile, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Patchouli, Rosewood, Rose, Sandalwood, and Tea Tree.

 

Unsafe Oils:

May cause teratogenic effects: Savin, Spanish Sage, Rosemary, Camphor

Can cause early labour or miscarriage: Clary Sage, Pennyroyal, Parsley Seed.

Aniseed, Birch, Hyssop, Mugwort, Oregano, Tansy, Tarragon, Wintergreen, Wormwood, Basil, Thuja, Nutmeg.
